contest.MYTHOLOGY TIME!! Chinese mythology, that is.
This is based on Chinese Mythology, in that Tu Di Gong (the big guy there with the cane) is an earth god, who was in charge of supplying particular Chinese villages with daily needs. Legend has it that he cares for those villagers very much, and he always gives them what they need.
Apparently he tends to give them too much. In some stories, he has a wife, Tu Di Po, who is sometimes seen as a grudging old woman fully in disapproval of her husband's over-blessings, and may even hold back some of the stuff Tu Di Gong has given to them.
Maybe he even cares about the villagers more than his own wife. To me, that wouldn't be much of a surprise.
